Character Information
Series: Elric of Melniboné, book series by Michael Moorcock.
Name: Cymoril
Age: 20
Grade/Job: University student, junior, majoring in magic
Dorm: Eremurus South
Physical Appearance: Cymoril is tall and slender, with a fragile, bird-like frame that is unaccustomed to physical exertion. She is far more suited to dancing and lounging than she is to any sort of manual labor. Her ears are pointed, reminiscent of the fabled elves of Middle Earth, though longer and capable of independent movement. Her eyes are an unnatural ice blue, paired with long black hair and pale skin.
Personality: Cymoril is rather distant and cool, mostly due to her lack of understanding of most human emotions. She finds them curious things, and enjoys studying them and how/why people react to specific stimuli. She is really quite temperamental, but she keeps it locked up for the sake of being professional. She is stubborn and defiant, but takes orders well, having been groomed for it since birth. Having little natural magical talent, she nonetheless has an affinity towards the occult. She is sophisticated, and finds pleasure in cruelty, though her heart has been known to melt on occasion.
History: Cymoril was born on the island of Melniboné, also called the Dragon Isle, in the city of Imrryr. Imrryr is also referred to as The Dreaming City due to the numerous hallucinogenic plants growing on the island, a favorite pastime of her race. Owing to a growing disinterest in the rest of the world – which was inhabited by lowly humans – and a dwindling population, her race drew in on itself, and only half-heartedly maintained trade with the Young Kingdoms. They felt secure in their fortress of an island, approachable only from one direction, and protected there by a massive sea maze littered with traps and dead ends; very few knew the way through. Beneath the island, dwelling in caves, were their greatest asset: dragons. These dragons were wont to sleep for decades, if not centuries, but if they could be awakened, Melnibonéan soldiers would ride them into war.
Cymoril was engaged to the 428th Emperor, Elric, who was also her cousin; another sign of the race’s growing decadence. Elric was an albino, physically weak and frail, requiring the use of herbs and other drugs in order to stay alive. Due to his ailment, he spent more time in the libraries growing up than anywhere else, and thus was more of a scholar than a true Melnibonéan. Many of his subjects believed that he should rule with a cruel, iron fist the way previous Emperors had, but he recognized the decline of his race and was unable to overcome his ‘morality’, something Cymoril attempted and failed to understand. Her brother, Yyrkoon, not only envied Elric for the throne, but also for his sister. Because of Elric’s unusual morality and human-like emotions, he was viewed as weak, and Yyrkoon was able to use that to his advantage.
Elric and Cymoril sneak out of Imrryr one afternoon for a little romantic privacy, where it is revealed she had some magical talent despite her brother forbidding her to contact any elementals due to the inherent danger in their form of magic. Cymoril instead studied in private, and while it is never shown exactly how much she learned, her power seems to be weak, and temporarily changing the weather was likely the most complicated thing she could accomplish.
After acquiring the sentient runesword, Stormbringer, Elric determines that in order to keep his race alive, he must travel to the Young Kingdoms – the nickname given for the human countries – and learn their ways. In his absence, he decided that Yyrkoon, despite his history of trying to usurp the throne, would rule. Cymoril and a mutual friend pleaded with him to stay, but he refused, and that was the last time he saw Cymoril alive. In Elric’s absence, Yyrkoon retrieved a second runesword, Mournblade, and put his sister into a sorcerous sleep, usurping the throne and turning his people against Elric. For the sake of brevity, Elric caught wind of Yyrkoon’s antics, raised a human reaver fleet to take the Isle – as Elric was one of the few who knew the way through the sea maze to get to the island – and in the process accidentally slew Cymoril, killed Yyrkoon, and destroyed Imrryr.
